The Trinamool Congress (TMC) dismissed reports claiming that the party’s National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee had received notices from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding multiple properties allegedly linked to him and his family, calling the claims “false” and “fabricated”.
In a statement, the party rejected media reports suggesting that the civic body had initiated scrutiny of several properties allegedly connected to Abhisek Banerjee. “We have come across media coverage and posts related to a KMC notice that was leaked ‘unofficially’ by the BJP, highlighting multiple properties allegedly linked to AITC National General Secretary and Hon’ble MP Shri Abhishek Banerjee, while also attempting to associate other leaders with the matter,” the TMC said.
The party further alleged that the reported notice lacked authenticity and accused political opponents of spreading misinformation. “The notice and the media coverage over the last few days are completely false, fabricated and devoid of any credibility,” the statement added.
The controversy emerged after reports claimed that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had issued notices seeking sanctioned building plans and related construction documents for several properties allegedly owned by or linked to Abhishek Banerjee, his relatives and a company.
According to reports, between 17 and 21 properties were reportedly brought under scrutiny to determine whether constructions at those sites complied with civic approvals and sanctioned building plans.
The properties reportedly include Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road in south Kolkata, an adjacent structure on Kalighat Road, and other locations across the city, including Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.
Civic officials cited in reports reportedly said the notices were issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which allows authorities to seek explanations regarding alleged unauthorised construction and permits property owners to present their case. The notices allegedly sought approved building plans and documents linked to construction work, including whether mandatory permissions had been obtained for structural changes or installations such as lifts and escalators.
However, the TMC urged journalists to independently verify the details rather than rely on what it termed politically motivated claims. “We urge journalists with a basic sense of ethics and understanding to visit the mentioned addresses or call the numbers cited in the said notice to verify the facts instead of merely propagating narratives being fed by the BJP,” the party said.
The party also issued a warning against what it described as misleading reporting. “We urge the media fraternity to exercise sensitivity and responsibility instead of promoting such fabricated posts and stories. Any false reporting or misleading posts will be dealt with appropriately in accordance with the provisions of law before the competent court,” the statement added.
