Ahead of the two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections, the Directors General of India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) convened a high-level joint meeting in Kolkata on April 18-19. The gathering, described by officials as unprecedented in the context of state polls, focused on forging an integrated security grid to ensure ‘free, fair, and peaceful’ voting on April 23 and April 29.
Senior officers from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) participated in the deliberations. The meeting, held initially for internal reviews and later expanded into a landmark joint leadership summit at the CRPF’s 3rd Signal Centre in Salt Lake, also involved top West Bengal Police officials and the Election Commission’s Police Advisor.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the chiefs reviewed the deployment of nearly two lakh CAPF personnel across sensitive and general polling areas. The emphasis was on seamless inter-force coordination, rapid response mechanisms, and the use of technology to create a foolproof security architecture. “The primary objective is to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election where every citizen can exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation,” a senior CAPF spokesperson said.
The meeting comes amid heightened security measures, including route marches and community outreach programmes by central forces in rural and vulnerable pockets to build public confidence and reassure voters. Multiple armoured capsule-based infantry mobility vehicles have been brought to Kolkata and other parts of Bengal - a sight that many had found hard to relate to with elections.
Photographs from the closed-door meeting have surfaced on social media platforms, showing the top brass in uniform seated around a long conference table at the Salt Lake venue. The images, widely shared by official handles and news agencies, depict a focused atmosphere with senior officers engaged in strategic discussions. One widely circulated photo captures the collective leadership of CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB alongside state police representatives.
With polling just days away, the CAPF leadership reiterated their commitment to strict adherence to Election Commission guidelines. “We are here to safeguard democracy,” an official statement noted, adding that the forces would work in close tandem with local law enforcement to handle any potential disruptors while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
