The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has called on political parties and public representatives to actively support the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across Mumbai. The appeal was made by Municipal Commissioner and District Election Officer Ashwini Bhide during a meeting held at the BMC headquarters on Friday.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various political parties, including Leader of Opposition Kishori Pednekar, along with several senior civic officials. The revision exercise is being conducted as per the directions of the Election Commission of India and covers both Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts. Officials said the initiative aims to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate and up to date.
Speaking at the meeting, Bhide stated that the last such intensive revision in Maharashtra was carried out in 2002. She explained that over time, factors such as migration, duplicate entries, deaths, and the inclusion of ineligible names make periodic updates necessary.
The SIR process will be conducted in six stages, including a pre-revision phase, enumeration, preparation of the AASD (Already Enrolled, Absent, Shifted, Dead) list, publication of the draft roll, a claims and objections period, and finally, the release of the updated electoral roll.
At present, the administration has begun voter mapping under the pre-revision phase in the Greater Mumbai region. This involves matching entries from the 2002 electoral rolls with the 2024 database using the BLO (Booth Level Officer) app.
Bhide emphasized that cooperation from political parties is key to ensuring the process is transparent and efficient. While the BMC has already appointed Booth Level Officers (BLOs), she urged political parties to deploy Booth Level Agents (BLAs) in their respective areas to assist with the verification process. Officials said the collaborative effort is expected to help streamline the revision process and improve the accuracy of Mumbai’s electoral rolls.
