The West Bengal government has formally granted sanction to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in connection with alleged financial irregularities and money laundering linked to the RG Kar case.
The approval was issued by the state Health and Family Welfare Department after Governor RN Ravi, acting as the competent authority, examined the FIR, case records and other relevant documents. The sanction allows the ED to proceed under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari described the move as a “positive step” toward justice in the aftermath of the August 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a case that sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests across West Bengal.
In a statement, Adhikari alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government had delayed the investigation process and asserted that “no one is above the law.” He also said the people of Bengal should witness justice being delivered in the case.
The case against Sandip Ghosh relates to alleged corruption, procurement irregularities and financial misconduct during his tenure as principal of RG Kar Medical College. The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed a probe into the allegations, following which the CBI and ED launched parallel investigations.
The CBI had previously filed charges against Ghosh and several others in connection with alleged corruption and criminal conspiracy linked to hospital administration and contracts. Ghosh was also questioned in the larger RG Kar rape-murder investigation and subjected to polygraph tests during the probe.
