West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced a statewide crackdown on illegal manufacturing units and unauthorised factories, warning that strict action would be taken against operators violating safety and environmental norms. The announcement came during his press conference at Nabanna following high-level administrative meetings with senior officials and ministers.
Referring to recent incidents involving explosions and accidents at illegal units in different parts of the state, Adhikari said the government would identify and shut down unauthorised factories operating without proper licences or safety clearances. According to reports, he directed district administrations and police authorities to begin immediate inspections and submit detailed reports on illegal industrial operations.
The chief minister stated, “No compromise would be made on public safety” and alleged that several illegal units had flourished earlier due to “political protection”. He said, “The administration had been instructed to act without fear or favour and ensure that unlawful activities are dismantled at the earliest.”
During the briefing, Adhikari reportedly stressed that industries operating within legal frameworks would receive full government support, but units violating regulations or endangering public lives would face closure and legal action. Officials were also asked to coordinate with pollution control authorities, fire services and local administrations to identify hazardous operations.
The government’s move comes amid growing scrutiny over illegal firecracker units, chemical factories and manufacturing setups functioning in residential areas across Bengal. Several such incidents in recent years have triggered political controversy and raised questions about enforcement failures and local-level oversight.
Sources cited in reports said the state administration is preparing district-wise surveys of unregistered factories and industrial clusters. The crackdown is expected to focus initially on units lacking trade licences, fire safety approvals and environmental clearances.
Adhikari also indicated that accountability would be fixed on officials found negligent in monitoring illegal operations. According to reports from the Nabanna briefing, the chief minister emphasised that law enforcement agencies and district administrations would be held responsible if unauthorised factories continue functioning despite warnings.
