A massive 89.99% voter turnout was recorded across West Bengal till 5 PM on Wednesday, according to data from the Election Commission of India, marking one of the most active polling phases in recent years. Over 3.5 crore voters cast ballots across 142 seats as polling sees high engagement and tight security, ECI sources said.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal earlier during a press conference noted that turnout had already crossed 80% by 3 PM, with Kolkata witnessing an impressive 75–80% participation—calling it “record voting.” Polling was conducted at over 41,000 booths, covering more than 3.5 crore voters across 142 constituencies.
Authorities reported tight security arrangements, with central forces and police maintaining vigilance. Agarwal confirmed that any irregularities were promptly addressed and emphasized that repolling would be considered if electoral integrity is compromised. Security personnel also intervened where necessary to maintain order.
Mamata Banerjee casts vote in Kolkata; Calls out central force deployment
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cast her vote in Kolkata during this crucial phase and raised serious allegations against the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Contesting from the high-profile Bhabanipur seat as a candidate of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), Banerjee accused central forces of intimidation.
She alleged that CRPF personnel were “beating people,” including women and children, and detaining party workers—calling it a “contempt of court.” Despite these claims, she expressed confidence in her party’s performance, stating that the TMC would secure victory.
Banerjee also demanded that voters standing in queues till 6 PM be allowed to cast their votes, while accusing central forces of acting in favor of a political party and questioning the absence of state police.
