Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Bhawanipur set for Mamata–Suvendu rematch as TMC unveils candidate list with strong diversity push

West Bengal’s political landscape is gearing up for a high-voltage contest as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is poised for a direct face-off with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from Bhabanipur, setting the stage for a renewed rivalry after their closely fought battle in Nandigram in the 2021 Assembly elections.

As part of its strategy for the 2026 polls, the All India Trinamool Congress has announced key changes in constituency allocations. Nandigram, which was at the centre of the previous electoral showdown, has now been assigned to Pabitra Kar, while Singur—another politically significant seat—will see Becharam Manna as the party’s candidate.

The candidate list reflects a strong emphasis on social representation. The party has fielded women in nearly half of its constituencies, marking a significant push toward gender inclusion. In addition, 47 seats have been allotted to candidates from minority communities, indicating a targeted outreach to diverse voter groups.

Party leaders suggest that the selections are aimed at balancing experienced leadership with newer faces while also factoring in local dynamics and electoral viability. The reshuffle across constituencies signals an attempt to consolidate support in key regions while addressing emerging political challenges.

With a high-profile contest in Bhabanipur and strategic candidate placements across the state, the TMC’s latest move is expected to significantly shape the narrative ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.​
