Guwahati: A polling official was found dead on Thursday morning in Assam’s Sonitpur district during the ongoing Assembly elections, officials said.
According to authorities, the official was discovered unconscious in his bed at the polling location. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The deceased has been identified as Horo, a resident of Dopdopi Kachari Gaon in the Chariduar revenue circle. He was working as an assistant teacher at a government school and had been deployed for election duty.
While the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained, medical officials suspect it may be linked to an underlying health condition.
Election officials deployed a reserve staff member to take his place, ensuring that the voting process continued without disruption.
Voting for Assam’s 126-member Assembly is currently underway, with a voter turnout of 75.91 per cent recorded till 3 pm. Polling will continue till 5 pm, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
