With the Assam Assembly elections around the corner, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a prediction about the outcome, expressing confidence in a sweeping victory for the ruling NDA.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the NDA is likely to secure between 90 and 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly. He also attacked congress claiming that the Congress may be restricted to around 16–17 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front could win 5–6 seats.
He added that Raijor Dal may manage just one seat, and ruled out any chances for the Assam Jatiya Parishad.
The Chief Minister went further, naming specific constituencies where he believes the NDA has an edge. He said the alliance would win comfortably in Tihu and Nalbari, while predicting a close contest in Sivasagar that would eventually tilt in favour of the NDA. According to him, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi’s party is likely to win only one seat, in Dihing.
Sarma also expressed confidence about the NDA’s prospects across key regions, including Dhubri and Golakganj. He added that the alliance would sweep all seats in Guwahati by a comfortable margin.
Extending his predictions to parliamentary segments, he said the NDA would register victories across all Assembly segments under Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, and Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituencies.
However, the Congress has dismissed Sarma’s all predictions. Party spokesperson Barnali Phukan accused the Chief Minister of being disconnected from ground realities.
“He is daydreaming. The results will surprise him. People of Assam are tired of misrule and are looking for change,” she said.
Assam will vote in a single phase on April 9 across all 126 Assembly constituencies.
