Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata night for a brief but politically significant visit, during this he is expected to intensify the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to party sources, Shah landed in Kolkata late Friday night. His visit is centred around a key political event on Saturday, where he will address a press conference and release a statewide “chargesheet” against the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The press conference is scheduled to begin around noon on Saturday and will be held at the same New Town hotel where Shah will be staying. The programme is expected to last for about an hour, following which he will leave for the airport and return to Delhi the same afternoon.
BJP’s ‘Chargesheet’
The proposed “chargesheet” is likely to outline a series of allegations against the Trinamool Congress government, covering what the BJP describes as governance failures over the past 15 years. Party sources indicate that the document will highlight multiple sectors where the BJP claims there has been a decline, forming a key part of its electoral strategy ahead of the polls.
Senior BJP leaders from the state, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and other top functionaries, are expected to be present to receive Shah at the airport and participate in the programme. Security arrangements have been heightened for the visit, with coordination between central agencies and state police.
The visit comes at a crucial time when the BJP is yet to announce candidates for several constituencies but has already stepped up campaign activities across the state. The release of the “chargesheet” is being positioned as a precursor to the party’s election manifesto, with leaders indicating that it will first highlight alleged issues before presenting proposed solutions.
