Tension was reported in Nandigram on Tuesday after allegations emerged that personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assaulted local residents in Kanchanpur. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, accusing the central forces of using excessive force, intimidating voters, and attacking villagers without provocation.
According to the complaint, residents of the 210 Nandigram Assembly constituency were subjected to physical assault and threats by CRPF personnel. The ruling party submitted photographs along with its complaint, claiming these incidents were not only unethical but also illegal.
The situation reportedly escalated in the constituency represented by Suvendu Adhikari (Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly ) where several disturbances were reported during the day . In Kanchanpur, villagers alleged that central force personnel beat them without any clear reason. In response, local women staged protests in the area.
In its letter to the Election Commission, the Trinamool Congress alleged that the CRPF was acting under the influence of the BJP and being used for political purposes. The party further claimed that the central forces, which are responsible for ensuring peaceful elections, were instead creating fear among voters.
The party has demanded immediate action from the Commission, including issuing a show cause notice to the CRPF, suspending the personnel involved, and ensuring that such incidents do not occur again.
TMC also addressed concerns to the Union Home Ministry led by Amit Shah, stating that the CRPF functions under it and alleging that the force was being misused. The party urged authorities to take steps to ensure that polling remains free, fair, and peaceful.
