A quiet evening by the waters of Bargi Dam turned into a scene of unspeakable grief, as a leisure cruise in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh ended in tragedy, claiming nine lives. The boat operated by the state tourism department, was carrying around 43 passengers including crew members when the incident occurred.
According to officials and eyewitnesses, the weather suddenly worsened, with strong winds and rough waters destabilizing the vessel. Passengers reportedly urged the crew to return to shore as the situation became unsafe, but the boat continued moving into deeper waters before overturning. Authorities said the high velocity winds likely destabilized the boat, causing it to lose control and capsize.
Several survivors have alleged serious safety lapses. They claimed that passengers were not made to wear life jackets before the journey began, and that these were distributed only after water had already started entering the boat, causing panic on board.
"It was really windy. We told the boat operator to come to the other end, but he paid no heed. It started for the other side but capsized in the middle of the dam. A few people in life jackets jumped off the boat. We safely rescued about 15-16 people. We rushed them to the hospital. The bodies were taken away," said Samrat, an eyewitness.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav attributed the capsize to a "severe storm" and posted on X, "Through swift rescue operations, 15 citizens have been safely rescued. Efforts are underway to locate those who are missing as quickly as possible."
"In this hour of crisis, the state government stands in full solidarity with the affected families with complete sensitivity, and every possible assistance is being ensured,” he added.
Rescue operators were launched immediately, with teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and local authorities pulling survivors from the water. While many were saved, nine people lost their lives, and search efforts continued for the missing.
Authorities have announced an investigation into the incident, focusing on possible negligence, safety protocol violations and the delay in providing life saving equipment.
